NORTHBROOK MIDDLE SCHOOL
DRESS CODE GUIDELINES

 
NMS Uniform Guidelines: Uniforms will be worn at all times with the exception of Spirit Days, which are on Fridays, the day before holidays, or days designated for pep rallies or special events. All articles of clothing may be purchased at local department stores (Wal-Mart, Sears, Target, The Gap,Macey’s , and J.C. Penney, etc.). All items sold as uniforms, are not necessarily acceptable under the NMS dress code.
 
Absences due to dress code violation are unexcused. All guidelines that are in addition to the NMS dress code guidelines listed in the Spring Branch Independent School District Middle School Student Handbook will be enforced.
 
Any article of clothing, jewelry, hair decoration, or hair color (pink, blue, red, green, etc.) that is considered a disruption to a classroom setting or the educational process will be considered a violation of the dress code.
 
Exceptions:   
·       Dress up days (announced in advance) that students may earn for special events.
·       Khaki pants for 8th graders who have no discipline issues.
·       Grade Level shirts that may be worn in place of uniform shirts Monday-Friday
     (7th and 8th grade only).
 
Recommended Basic Uniform:
 
  • Navy blue slacks/shorts/skirts/jumpers/skorts
  • Socks
  • White 3-button polo style shirt with collar/no ruffles or emblems—NEW: Shirts must be TUCKED IN
  • Shoes or sneakers
    • only solid white, black or brown shoes will be permitted (or combination of)
    • shoe laces must be solid white, black or brown, ONLY.
    • shoes must be appropriately laced, tied and velcroed at all time
    • no open-toed, open-backed, sling-backed, or sandals
  • Belt (only solid white, navy, black or brown ones permitted)
  • NMS Sweatshirt (optional)
  • Sweater (navy or white pullover or cardigan)
 
Specific Items:
 
Boys: All items must fit appropriately      
  • Navy slacks/NO CARGO Pockets: clothing must fit at the waist and in the seat/no baggy pants
  • Navy shorts—no longer than knee length/no drawstring hems
  • Long or short sleeved white knit 3-button polo style shirt with collar  or
  • Long or short sleeved button down white oxford shirt with collar
  • Undershirts must be plain white ONLY. No colored or writing on shirts that are underneath the white polo shirt are permitted.
 
Girls:        
  • Navy slacks—twill or cotton/no lycra/spandex/polyester (elastic waist nylon/polyester pants that fit tightly are not acceptable) cotton/polyester blends are ok if the style is ok.
OR       navy walking shorts         Must be appropriate length (no shorter than 3 inches above the knee)
OR       navy skirt                       Must be appropriate length—no slits
OR       navy skort                      Must be appropriate length—no slits
OR       navy jumper                   Must be appropriate length and style (plain-free of decoration)
 
LENGTH: Skirt, short, jumper and skort length may not be shorter than three (3) inches above the knee.   In the event of a question, the assistant principal makes the final decision.
 
 
 
 
Spirit Day Uniform (Fridays, day before a holiday, or special events):
 
On Spirit Days, students may wear either their regular school uniform or:
  • A NorthbrookMiddle School spirit shirt (sold by various clubs and organizations),
  • Blue jeans (see Recommended Basic Uniform)—plain and must fit appropriately.
  • Sneakers/shoes (black, brown or white)
  • Sweater (navy or white pullover or cardigan)
  • Or an NMS sweatshirt
  • Uniform shirt may NOT be worn with jeans.
 
*Blue jeans for spirit day must fit at the waist and seat, and may not be stapled, frayed, or dragging on the floor. Blue jeans must be plain blue, no appliqué, embroidery, laces, sparkles, faded out denim, hip huggers—must have belt loops, no stretch jeans or spandex. Jeans that fit too tight or too baggy will be determined by an administrator.
 
General Dress Code Guidelines:
 
  • Clothing must fit at the waist and may not be below the hips and must fit in the seat of the shorts or pants. Baggy pants are not acceptable.
  • All shorts must fit above the knee, not below the knee.
  • Capri pants are not allowed
  • Sweatshirts, except NMS sweatshirts, are NOT allowed.
  • No turtlenecks.
  • No long sleeved shirts underneath short sleeved shirts are allowed.
  • T-shirts worn underneath shirts must be plain white
  • Shirts must be tucked in
  • No writing should be seen under the uniform shirt and should not hang below the dress shirt.
  • Footwearsuch as sandals, flip-flops, mules, clogs, open-backed, sling-backed or skate shoes are not acceptable.
  • Sweaters may be navy OR white/pullover or cardigan.
  • Pullover navy or white sweater vests may be worn.
  • NO BACKPACKS in any classroom at NMS: Backpacks must be kept in lockers during the school day.
  • Purses may be carried. No bookbags, tote bags, or nylon back pack bags at any time during the school day.
 
Jewelry:
  • Earrings: 
    • Boys – no hoop or dangle earrings. Only one stud earring is allowed. 
    • Girls –no inappropriate words (such as SEXY). Hoops no larger than a quarter.
  • Rings: No more than two per hand.
  • Necklaces:No more than two necklaces may be worn at any time and must be of appropriate size and length.   The school may require that a large oversized necklace be removed or tucked inside the shirt. 
  • Bracelets: only silver, gold, white OR colored plastic bracelets that are pre approved by NMS are allowed
  •  Hair Accessories: ONLY white, black, brown, silver or gold
 
Cold Weather/Winter Apparel Guidelines: 
Big/bulky jackets or winter garments must be left in lockers. Flannel shirts are not allowed in school and may not be used as a jacket. No overcoats or trench coats are allowed. The ONLY navy blue sweatshirts that are allowed are those that say NMS on them.
 
Dress Code will be checked each day. Students with dress code violations will receive disciplinary action which may include being sent home from school or placed in ISS until dress code violations are corrected. Every attempt will be made to contact parents. Students may be required to wear “school provided” items if a parent cannot be reached. Absences due to dress code violations are not excused.
